Matana Roberts et les Sioux de Standing Rock
La saxophoniste Matana Roberts soutient la décision du 4 décembre 2016, prise par le gouvernement des États-Unis, de rejeter le tracé d’un oléoduc controversé.
La tribu sioux de Standing Rock considère que l’oléoduc menace ses sources d’eau potable et plusieurs sites où sont enterrés ses ancêtres. Elle avait demandé au président Barack Obama d’intervenir pour faire arrêter ce chantier. Les autorités américaines ont donc annoncé avoir rejeté le tracé dans le Dakota du Nord, tel qu’il était proposé par la compagnie Energy Transfer Partners, offrant une victoire aux Amérindiens et aux écologistes. L’oléoduc, baptisé Dakota Access Pipeline, devait traverser quatre États américains sur 1.886 kilomètres et acheminer le pétrole extrait dans le Dakota du Nord, à la frontière canadienne, jusque dans l’Illinois, plus au sud.
Concernée de près par le sort de ces populations, la saxophoniste Matana Roberts vient de mettre en ligne trois morceaux inédits « For standing Rock I, II & III », étapes de travail de son projet actuel autour de collages visuels et sonores, enregistrées dans le métro.
Dans un communiqué (à lire en V.O. ci-dessous) elle se dit « complètement horrifiée » par l’actualité politique américaine, rend hommage à son père, disparu cette année, et invite les internautes à télécharger cet EP, afin de soutenir le projet « The Water Protector Legal Collective (at Standing Rock) » mouvement de manifestation non violent visant à protéger les sources d’eau potables des tribus Sioux du Dakota du Nord.

"These are 3 solo saxophone field recordings done in underground american subway systems that I am using to build larger sound and vision collages. It’s not always legal to play in public subways and any musician going down there is taking chances but at least it’s not the kind of chances where you have to wonder about rubber bullets, water torture, LRADS, and state violence.
I am an American who is directly descended from Indigenous Americans who walked against their will on the Trail of Tears. I am an American w/ a classic « melting pot » bloodline, who is sometimes inspired by her country’s history in terms of it’s ability to sometimes (but not oft enough) learn from it’s failures. This is a year of a unique sadness and beyond frightful failures…
I’m completely horrified by the American news these days and especially the (too little) news coming out of Standing Rock.

The cover of this collection of sounds is from a segment of a collage that i use in a larger visual/graphic music score. It is created from an old photo that i found hiding on a lonely junk shop table. It was taken in 1894 by Canadian born Photog George Barker. It sadly reads : « Sioux Indians Two Fine Types of a Dying Race. »
The titles of these 3 tracks are worth googling to better understand the source of this current struggle.
Lastly, the entirety of this action is dedicated to my father D.L. Roberts, who passed away this year… A life long scholar and freedom fighter he was the very 1st person to teach me about the strength of the impending cyber age for sharing, spreading, engaging and giving voice to the politically silenced… It is in his memory ; I place this contribution of hope for a downtrodden people who are showing by example that getting knocked down in America, is just another way of getting back up….
